Getting to Fiji by plane is pretty straightforward from most of the East Coast capitals. Flying in from either Sydney or Melbourne usually takes 4-5 hours, whilst a flight from Brisbane takes only 3 hours in the air. Fiji flights go to both the capital Suva and Nadi, so it's worth remembering that if you've booked a holiday at one of the many Coral Coast resorts or at one of Fiji's popular island resorts, you will save yourself a lot of travel time if you fly into Nadi.
The majority of Sydney flights get you to Nadi in the evening. In contrast, Melbourne has broader travel options with some flights even going through the night and delivering you comparatively refreshed in the morning. Wherever you fly in from, once you get to Nadi you will almost certainly have to journey a little further before you actually get to relax and enjoy your Fiji holiday.
Travel On Fiji
Once on the main island of Viti Levu, there are a number of transport options available to you. Most of the big hotels and resorts offer airport transfer as part of the holiday packages and at certain times of day, much of the road traffic is made up of coaches, mini vans, and taxis, delivering tourists to and from their holiday accommodation.
If you are staying at a Fiji Island resort, such as Castaway Island or Treasure Island, your transfer will include either a boat of ferry trip across to your resort or a light plane flight.
If you feel like getting out and seeing a bit o more of the local colour and really get a feel for Fiji and it's fabulous people, taking a trip on one of the public buses from your nearest village bus stop is a great way to make friends and find out what is really going on outside the holiday resort gates.
Fiji Cruises
Fiji is an increasingly popular cruise destination and some of the major cruise lines (including Captain Cook Cruises and P & O) run South Pacific cruises which take in many of the areas fabulous islands, including Fiji.
An alternative to a Fiji cruise package is to book yourself on to one of the many yachts that offer everything from day trips and half day sailing excursions, to 7 night sailing holidays around the beautiful Yasawa and Mamanuca Islands off the coast of Viti Levu. Fiji is a boating enthusiasts paradise and all kinds of boats, yachts and catamarans are available for hire, either with a crew, or without.
Fiji Family Holiday Travel Advice
Whilst the flying time to your Fiji holiday may be short, you should be aware that you will probably have more travelling to do once you get off the plane. There are some hotels near Nadi Airport, but the majority of the holiday accommodation lies either along the Coral Coast or on one of the resort islands, and that means a further bus or boat ride – often late in the evening or before dawn. To combat this, some families with young children who take regular Fiji holidays choose to book a single night's accommodation at a hotel in Nadi before continuing on to their main resort in the morning.
Driving to your resort late at night along sometimes bumpy roads can also cause travel sickness in some visitors, especially younger members of the family, so it is best to be prepared for such eventualities – just in case!
